Bloomington summer youth musicals hit stage

Bloomington Community Education has announced its Youth Summer Musical performance schedule for Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” and “Thoroughly Modern Millie Jr.”

Disney's The Little Mermaid

“The Little Mermaid” will be performed at 7 p.m. July 26–29, and 3 p.m. July 29 in the Kennedy High School auditorium, 9701 Nicollet Ave. S. A preview performance for seniors is at 10 a.m. on July 25.

Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories and the classic animated film, “The Little Mermaid” is a beautiful love story for the ages. With music by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken, this story will capture the hearts of audiences young and old. More than 50 high school and middle school student performers, musicians and technical crew are under the direction of Natalie Schmit, with musical direction by Seth Bovis, set design by Kevin Murphy and costumes by Laurie Clements.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors and are available at the door one hour prior to each performance. Tickets for the senior preview show are $5.

Thoroughly Modern Millie

“Thoroughly Modern Millie Jr.” will be at 7 p.m. July 20-22 and 2 p.m. July 22 in the Oak Grove Middle School Auditorium, 1300 West 106th St. A preview performance for seniors is at 10 a.m. on July 19.

Filled with dashing characters and a villainess audiences will love to hate, “Thoroughly Modern Millie Jr.” is a clever adaptation of the six-time Tony Award-winning show. More than 45 elementary and middle school student performers are under the direction of Erika Sasseville with assistance from Lydia Mwambi.

Tickets are $7 and are available at the door one hour prior to each performance. Tickets for the senior preview show are $5.
